The death toll in a road accident in Dhar rose to 16 on Thursday after a pickup truck carrying around 50 labourers rolled over several times due to a tyre burst on the Indore–Ahmedabad highway. The victims included four women and six children. At least 30 people were also injured in the accident the previous night. The last rites of the deceased were held on Thursday afternoon. The entire Nayapura village, from where the victims belonged, was in mourning. At the funeral, many weeping relatives of the victims were seen holding photographs of their loved ones. How the accident happened The accident took place on Wednesday night at around 8:30 pm near Chikaliya Fata, close to a Jio petrol pump. The vehicle was speeding at 100 kmph when one of its tyres burst, causing the driver to lose control. According to an eyewitness, Shubham Sisodiya, the pickup truck flipped multiple times, hit a divider, and crossed over to the other side of the road, where an oncoming SUV rammed into it. Indore Rural DIG Manoj Kumar Singh, who inspected the spot on Thursday morning, said, “Over-speeding appears to be the primary cause of the accident.” He also pointed to poor road conditions, blaming the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). Additionally, there were neither signboards nor stop signals at the spot. Singh said that he would send a letter to NHAI highlighting these concerns. Victims who died in the accident Critically injured referred to Indore Commissioner Sudam Khade stated that seven critically injured were referred to Indore, while around 15 others were sent to local hospitals for treatment. Meanwile, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav announced financial assistance of ₹4 lakh for the families of the deceased, ₹1 lakh for the seriously injured, and ₹50,000 for those with minor injuries. He has directed officials to ensure free treatment for all injured and has placed hospitals in Indore on alert. Additionally, the Indore Divisional Commissioner and Inspector General of Police have been instructed to visit Dhar and oversee medical arrangements. State minister Kailash Vijayvargiya also expressed sorrow over the tragic incident.
