In Bhopal, a case of fraud, physical exploitation, and pressure for religious conversion with an engineering student has now taken a new turn. For the first time, a Muslim organization has openly announced to take a stand against the accused and come out in support of the victim. The All India Muslim Tyohar Committee has called it serious and shameful and demanded the immediate arrest of the accused. Made friendship by changing name, established relations by giving false promise of marriage According to the FIR registered at the women’s police station, a student of a private university has alleged that she met a young man in 2023, who introduced himself as “Ashish Pandey”. After friendship, the accused gave false promise of marriage and had physical relations with the student several times. The student alleges that later she came to know that the young man’s real name is Asif Raza. When she talked about marriage, the accused refused. Attitude changed after becoming pregnant, allegations of threats According to the victim, in January 2026 when she informed about being pregnant, the accused reached her house with two of his companions. Here, while clearly refusing marriage, he gave her death threats, acid attack threats and other serious threats. The FIR also mentions that the accused pressured her for religious conversion, which the student rejected. After this, she continued to receive threats. Allegations of taking money and blackmail as well The student has also alleged that the accused took money from her online and in cash during the relationship. Along with this, he continuously applied mental pressure and blackmailed her by giving false promises of marriage. No arrest even after 2 months, questions on police Questions are being raised as no accused has been arrested yet despite the FIR registered on March 5, 2026. The victim says she is still receiving threats and is afraid to leave her home. She alleged that initially the police also hesitated in registering the FIR and advised for a compromise. The victim says that one youth was arrested but he too was released. Muslim organization said ‘We are ashamed, we stand with the daughter’ Shamsul Hasan, patron of All India Muslim Tyohar Committee, said that this is a very serious matter and such an incident with a student is shameful for the entire state. He said that the accused befriended her by changing his name and whatever he did is condemnable. The organization clarified that they do not consider this ‘Love Jihad’, but rather the act of some individuals, saying that the entire community cannot be held responsible for this. The organization has also announced to bear the complete expenses of the victim’s legal battle and education. One week ultimatum, otherwise CM House siege The Muslim organization has warned the state government that if the accused are not arrested within a week, the Chief Minister’s residence will be besieged. The organization raised the question that when girl students are not safe even in the capital, how can claims of women’s safety in the state be considered correct. Victim said, ‘I only want justice, not marriage’ The victim clearly stated that she does not want to marry the accused, but wants to ensure he receives strict punishment. She says that the accused kept her in deception, blackmailed her, and even threatened to kill her when she became pregnant. Currently, she is scared and hesitant to even step outside. Case registered under multiple sections including religious conversion law The Women’s Police Station has registered a case based on the victim’s complaint, recording the offense under sections 60, 351(2), and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) at first sight. Along with this, sections 3(1)(a) and 5 of the Madhya Pradesh Religious Freedom Act, 2021 have also been applied, which relate to forced religious conversion and associated acts. The police have taken the case for investigation and started examining the allegations. However, the delay in action has now put the police’s functioning under scrutiny.
