Indian Railways is going to make many big changes to make travel comfortable and high-tech in the financial year 2026-27. The Ministry of Railways has completed preparations to introduce the country’s first hydrogen train on track, from changing ticket cancellation and refund rules. The new refund policy will be implemented by April 15. Additionally, passengers will also receive the gift of 12 new Vande Bharat sleeper trains this year. Let’s know about 8 major changes that will happen in the railways in this financial year. 1. New Rules: Refund will be available 8 hours before train departure Indian Railways has tightened the rules for ticket cancellation and refund. Now, a passenger will get a refund only if they cancel the ticket 8 hours before the train’s departure. Earlier this time was 4 hours, which has now been increased to 8 hours. According to the new rules, if you cancel your ticket less than 8 hours before your scheduled travel time, you will not get any money back. However, if you cancel the ticket between 24 and 8 hours, you will still get only 50% of the money back. The new rules will be applicable till April 15. 2. Counter tickets can now be cancelled from any station A big relief for passengers is that now there will be no need to go to the same station or the last station to cancel a counter ticket. Passengers can now go to the counter of any railway station in the country to cancel their ticket and get a refund. 3. Boarding station can be changed even after chart preparation Passengers will soon be able to digitally change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before the train departs from its originating station. Previously, this facility was available only before the chart was prepared. Under the new rule, if a passenger misses the train from their original station, they can choose the next station and travel on a confirmed seat. 4. Facility to upgrade travel class in train will be available Now, passengers will be able to upgrade their travel class, such as from Sleeper to AC, up to 30 minutes before the train departs. Previously, this change was only possible before the chart was prepared. This rule is also expected to be implemented in the current financial year. 5. Hydrogen train: Trial of pollution-free journey completed India is very close to launching its first hydrogen train. Research Design and Standards Organization (RDSO) has completed its trial. This will be the world’s longest (10 coaches) and most powerful (2400kW) hydrogen train. It will have two driving power cars and 8 passenger coaches. This train will be completely eco-friendly and will emit only water vapor instead of smoke. 6. 12 new Vande Bharat sleeper trains will run for long distances To make long-distance travel premium, Railways is going to launch 12 Vande Bharat sleeper trains this year. Two such trains have already been launched on the Howrah-Kamakhya route. The train is equipped with advanced safety features Vande Bharat Sleeper has advanced safety features, a better suspension system, and world-class sleeper coaches. The Railway Minister stated that usually, the airfare on the Guwahati-Howrah route ranges between ₹6,000 to ₹8,000. Sometimes it even reaches up to ₹10,000. Whereas, in Vande Bharat Sleeper, the fare for Third AC from Guwahati to Howrah has been set at ₹2,300. 7. 75 new holding areas will be built at stations, providing relief from crowds Following the success of New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS), the Ministry of Railways is now going to build permanent ‘Passenger Amenity Centers’ (Holding Areas) at 75 more major stations across the country. The construction of these is targeted to be completed this year. This will reduce congestion on station platforms and provide passengers with an organized place to wait for their train. 8. Broad gauge network nearing 100% electrification Indian Railways is close to fully electrifying its broad gauge network. Currently, 99.2% of the network has been electrified, covering 25 states and union territories. It is expected to be 100% by the end of financial year 2026-27.
