over-20,000-buildings-in-indore,-only-181-inspected-so-far:parking-chaos-continues-despite-joint-campaign-by-administration,-police,-and-municipal-corporation

In a city with a population of 40 lakh, there are more than 20,000 multi-storey buildings, but so far only 181 buildings have been inspected or surveyed. A total of 134 multi-storey buildings have been sealed. Basements have been converted into parking in only 96 buildings. Among these, two-wheeler parking has resumed in 87 buildings, while car parking has restarted in just 7 buildings. These figures are from April 1, 2024, to March 31, 2026. In 2026, from January till now, 67 buildings have been inspected across 22 zones. Out of these, parking has been made functional in only 27 buildings. Whether it is Sheetlamata Market or the medicine market, Jail Road or MG Road, vehicles are parked haphazardly everywhere, leaving no space even for pedestrians in the markets. Despite this, the joint campaign by the administration, police and municipal corporation in the name of parking has remained limited to meetings even after two years. Most buildings on AB Road do not have basement parking, and vehicles are parked on service roads. Car parking has resumed in only 33 buildings, leading to traffic congestion along roadsides. Recently, in a meeting, Collector Shivam Verma directed that special focus should be given to developing parking spaces under road safety measures. Vehicles parked along roadsides disrupt traffic, and strict action, such as issuing fines and wheel-locking, should continue against illegal parking. A special drive should be carried out continuously to increase parking spaces. Mandatory use of basement parking in buildings must be ensured, and any misuse will invite legal action, including sealing. Meanwhile, the traffic police claim that they are using drones to identify and seize vehicles parked on roads or issue challans. Campaign yet to reach major markets In areas such as Jail Road, Medicine Market, Khajuri Bazaar, Chhawani, Geeta Bhawan, Dhakkanwala Kuan, South Tukoganj, Race Course Road, High Court to Malwa Mill, Annapurna Road, Vijay Nagar to Sukhlia, and even major hospitals, basement parking is not being fully utilised. Similarly, in areas like Sapna-Sangeeta Road (two-wheeler market), Tower Square to Khatiwala Tank, Bholaram Ustad Marg, Bada Ganpati to Rajmohalla, and Aerodrome Road, underground parking is not being properly used. In most places, the ground floor has been converted into shops. The same situation exists in newly developed colonies as well. On AB Road, from Vijay Nagar to LIG, vehicles parked on service roads clearly indicate that parking norms are not being followed. Despite inspections, there has been little visible improvement in the situation.
