Indore residents are set to get relief from heavy traffic at Lavkush Square soon. The Indore Development Authority has installed the first bow-string structure, weighing around 400 metric tons, at a height of 23 metres on a six-lane Level-2 flyover. Officials say the flyover is likely to open by June. Once ready, travel on the Indore-Ujjain road will become faster, smoother, and free from traffic signals. Thousands of daily commuters are expected to save time, while fuel use may also reduce. The flyover, being built above the metro line, is aimed at easing congestion in the area. Work on this six-lane Level-2 flyover began on January 15, 2025, and is expected to be completed in about one and a half years. Traffic pressure on the Indore-Ujjain road has increased sharply in recent years, making such infrastructure necessary. The project is also being seen as a step towards improving connectivity as Indore moves towards becoming a metropolitan city. With construction continuing day and night, officials believe traffic flow will become smooth here well before the Simhastha in 2028. In a bow-string design, the main structure of the bridge is shaped like a bow. This structure carries heavy loads in a balanced manner and provides strong support for long-span distances. This is why it is considered a modern and durable bridge design. Use of Technology and Heavy Machinery According to IDA CEO Dr. Parikshit Jhade, approximately 800 metric tons of steel staging and girders were used for the launching. For this, cranes with capacities of 600 tons and 300 tons were installed. Additionally, PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene) pulling technology was adopted with the help of 3 winch machines. This state-of-the-art technology was used to precisely position the bow-string. 175 Crore Project, State’s First Bow-String Bridge This flyover, being built at a cost of approximately 175 crore rupees, is the state’s first bow-string bridge.
