A ragging-related dispute at Shyam Shah Medical College in Rewa turned violent on Monday. What began at the UG hostel later spilled into the emergency department of Sanjay Gandhi Hospital, where students were seen chasing and assaulting each other in the presence of seriously ill patients and their relatives. See photos…… Clash begins at UG hostel According to information, senior students allegedly started ragging first-year students at the UG hostel on Monday afternoon. When the juniors objected, the situation escalated into a physical clash. It is alleged that senior students attacked the juniors using sticks and belts kept inside the hostel. Around half a dozen junior students suffered head injuries in the violence. Violence spreads to hospital emergency The injured students were taken to the emergency ward of Sanjay Gandhi Hospital for treatment. By evening, members of both groups came face to face again, leading to another violent clash inside the emergency ward and hospital corridors. Students chased each other and assaulted one another with kicks, punches and sticks within the hospital premises. Patients attendants forced to flee Eyewitnesses said hundreds of critically ill patients and their relatives were present in the emergency ward at the time of the incident. Panic spread as the violence erupted, forcing many patients and attendants to flee without completing treatment. It is alleged that the security personnel on duty were unable to control the situation. College dean assures action After being informed of the incident, Shyam Shah Medical College Dean Dr Sunil Agrawal reached the spot. After hearing complaints from junior students, he assured strict action against those found guilty. Sanjay Gandhi Hospital CMO Dr Ishita Agrawal termed the violence inside hospital premises a serious matter and said action would be taken as per rules. Past allegations of ragging The medical college has earlier faced allegations of ragging and related violence. Each time, the issue subsided after assurances of action. However, the latest incident has raised serious questions about student discipline and the safety of patients, especially when violence broke out inside a sensitive area like a hospital emergency ward.
