Repeatedly said I’m hungry, give me food, but no one was listening. The situation was such that when I got seven spoons of water one day, then I realized that I could drink more than three spoons of water. The shocking ordeal faced by senior doctor Hemlata Shrivastava of Jabalpur has come to light after her rescue. Dr Hemlata stated that she was denied food entirely and was given only three spoonfuls of water in a full day. “If food was given, I would eat, but food was never provided. Except for Teej, I had never gone hungry in my life, but here I was deliberately kept starving,” she said. Following a written complaint by the Indian Medical Association (IMA) to the Collector, administrative intervention led to Dr Hemlata being shifted from a private hospital to the medical college. At present, a team of doctors is monitoring her round-the-clock. It is suspected that she was deliberately kept hungry and thirsty as part of a conspiracy to kill her and seize her valuable property. Her condition remains critical and she is on ventilator support. Dr. Hemlata was rescued from her home to the medical college. Hemlata’s sister had brought her home from a private hospital, after which the IMA team rescued her from home and sent her. Cut cake on January 12 birthday, health deteriorated on 14th Dr Hemlata Shrivastava turned 81 on January 12. A video of the birthday celebration has surfaced, showing Dr Sumit Jain and his wife Prachi Jain cutting a cake with her. It is alleged that Hemlata, who was healthy till January 13, suddenly fell ill on January 14. She was admitted to Mukherjee Hospital, located opposite her house, after which her condition deteriorated. Ulcers developed on her hand. Dr Sumit Jain claimed that Tarun Bahrani was present at the hospital. He alleged that with the help of hospital management, some medication was administered that worsened Dr Hemlata’s condition. He also claimed that the video being described as from the medical college is actually from Mukherjee Hospital. Sumit Jain’s claim – Donation was made willingly Dr Sumit Jain claimed that Dr Hemlata, while fully conscious, had donated nearly 11,000 square feet of land adjacent to her house through a registered deed. He said it was her wish that a memorial hospital be built in the name of her father-in-law BL Shrivastava and her son Rachit Shrivastava, and construction is underway. He stated that Rachit Shrivastava had studied with him and that they shared a close friendship. “We visited each other frequently and took continuous care of her. She was like a mother to us, which is why she relied on us whenever she had to go anywhere,” he said. First son’s death, husband also passed away after three years Dr Hemlata Shrivastava is a senior ophthalmologist in Jabalpur. Her son Rachit, also a doctor, died in 2022 due to a silent heart attack. After his death, Dr Hemlata and her husband lived together. In December 2025, her husband also passed away. Living alone in her valuable property in Jabalpur’s posh Wright Town area, she became increasingly isolated. On November 9, 2025, she attended a medical education conference in Jabalpur and was reportedly completely healthy at that time. On January 26, Dr Richa Sharma, junior doctor and President of IMA Jabalpur, received information that Dr Hemlata’s condition had deteriorated severely, describing her state as like a living corpse. Sister wrote letter – Wants to die at home On January 15, individuals associated with a trust were seen taking Dr Hemlata away in a car. When neighbours objected, an argument followed. After a police complaint, she was brought back home at night. Despite her critical condition, her sister later got her discharged from the hospital, stating that she wished to die peacefully at home. Dr. Kankalata’s argument with IMA members When IMA doctors attempted to get Dr Hemlata admitted to a hospital, an argument ensued with Dr Kankalata, who reportedly said that her sister wanted to stay at home and die. With administrative assistance, IMA President Dr Richa Sharma and member Dr Abhijeet Vishnoi arranged Dr Hemlata’s admission to Jabalpur Medical College Hospital. Doctors say there is some hope of improvement, though she remains on ventilator support. IMA has expressed suspicion that Dr Hemlata was deliberately starved and dehydrated as part of a conspiracy to kill her, demanding a thorough investigation. Admitted to Medical College on Collector’s instructions After Dr Hemlata’s condition worsened, attempts were made to admit her to various hospitals in the city. Acting on the IMA’s complaint, Jabalpur Collector Raghavendra Singh ordered her admission to the medical college. The Collector has also directed that her treatment be monitored by a five-member medical team and ordered an investigation into the alleged conspiracy to seize the elderly doctor’s property, assuring legal action in the matter.
