In Indore’s Bhagirathpura, another patient died on Friday due to illness spread by contaminated water. The deceased has been identified as 72-year-old Eknath Suryavanshi, whom Congress senior leader Rahul Gandhi had visited at Bombay Hospital. After this death, a total of 31 people have lost their lives in the case so far. Eknath Suryavanshi was first admitted to Shelby Hospital on December 29, 2025, after complaints of vomiting and diarrhea. As his condition deteriorated, he was referred to Bombay Hospital on January 3, 2026, where he was shifted to ventilator support on January 4. His treatment continued for about 30 days, during which he remained on ventilator for more than 25 days. On Thursday evening, family members took him home after discharge with their consent, where he passed away. Doctor said – Multi-organ failure condition in most cases According to doctors, both kidneys of Eknath Suryavanshi had failed, liver was damaged and the disease had affected the heart and brain. Due to contaminated water, most patients developed multi-organ failure. Suryavanshi had been working in the Water Resources Department since 1983 as a daily wage earner. After many years he was made permanent, but at that time his salary was around 18 thousand rupees and he could not get pension and other service benefits. His case regarding this is pending in the High Court. His wife Shakuntala (63) is a heart patient, while his two sisters are married. More than 450 patients discharged so far Meanwhile, in the Bhagirathpura contaminated water case, more than 450 patients have been discharged after treatment so far. Currently four patients are hospitalized, out of which three are in ICU of Bombay Hospital and one is undergoing treatment at Arvindo Hospital. The primary health center in the area is still operating 24 hours and two ambulances have been deployed. Currently, only one or two mild cases of diarrhea are being reported, but despite the improving situation, residents of the area are still apprehensive.
