A 57-year-old government school teacher died of a suspected heart attack in Satna on Wednesday night, shortly after learning that his younger son’s motorcycle had been seized by the police for an alleged drink-driving violation, family members said. The deceased, Ramprasad Verma, was posted as a teacher at Amilia Primary School in the Kulgadhi complex. He was also holding additional charge as a Booth Level Officer (BLO). According to the family, the incident that preceded his death took place around 8.30 p.m., when Mr. Verma’s younger son, Rohit Verma, was standing with his friends — Ankit Shukla, Rishabh Singh and another youth — at the Sohawal ground. Their motorcycles were parked nearby. A police team from the Civil Line police station arrived at the spot during a checking drive and took all four youths to the police station along with their motorcycles. At around 11 p.m., Rohit’s elder brother, Karan Verma, reached the police station, where a head constable informed him that Rohit had been challaned under the drink-driving provision. He was told that the motorcycle would now be released only through court proceedings. The family has alleged that while Rohit’s motorcycle was seized, one of the other motorcycles was released after a payment of ₹500 was allegedly taken by the head constable on duty. After completing the formalities, Rohit returned home with his elder brother and informed the family about the police action. Soon after, Ramprasad Verma reportedly suffered a heart attack. He was taken for medical assistance but was declared dead.
