A speeding car ran over 12 labourers cleaning road railings in Jabalpur on Sunday afternoon, killing two on the spot and injuring 10 others. Seven of the injured are stated to be in critical condition. All the injured were shifted to the medical college hospital with the help of 108 ambulances. The accident occurred around 2 pm at Ekta Chowk in the Barela police station area. According to information, the labourers had finished cleaning the iron railings on the road divider and were sitting there having their meal when a speeding white car, coming from Barela towards Jabalpur, rammed into them and fled the spot. Eyewitnesses said around 24 labourers were working near Ekta Chowk. During lunch, the car suddenly ran over them, triggering panic at the scene. Local residents immediately informed the Barela police and Dial 108. On receiving the information, station in-charge Anil Patel reached the spot with his team and rushed the injured to hospital. Injured labourer Mahant Uikey said the car appeared suddenly and sped away after crushing his co-workers. Before they could react, several labourers were lying injured on the road. Barela police station in-charge Anil Patel said treatment of the injured is underway and a search has been launched for the absconding car driver.
