Batting first, India scored 284/7 riding on KL Rahul’s unbeaten 112 and captain Shubman Gill’s 56. In response, Daryl Mitchell scored 131* as New Zealand chased down the target in 47.3 overs. There were several records and milestones achieved in the Rajkot ODI. Virat Kohli became the highest run-scorer against New Zealand, while Rohit Sharma completed 7000 ODI runs in Asia. Meanwhile, Prasidh Krishna dropped Mitchell’s catch when he was on 82. With the series now levelled 1-1, all eyes will be on the third and final ODI, which will be played in Indore on 18 January. Virat Kohli Surpasses Sachin Tendulkar Virat Kohli broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of most runs against New Zealand in ODIs. He got to the mark as soon as he scored his first run in his 23-run knock. He became the Indian with the most runs against New Zealand in ODIs. Virat now has 1773 runs, the most by an Indian against New Zealand, while Sachin had scored 1750 runs. Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting leads this as the top-scorer against New Zealand, with 1971 runs in 50 innings. 2. KL Rahul equals his highest ODI score While India’s batting did not impress as much, it was KL Rahul who stood out with a sensational century. The right-hander equalled his highest ODI score, playing an unbeaten knock of 112 runs off 92 balls against New Zealand. Coincidentally, he had scored 112 against New Zealand back in 2020 as well. 3. KL Rahul’s Unique Record With his 112*, KL Rahul became only the sixth Indian to score an ODI century against New Zealand, both in India and New Zealand. Rahul had hit an ODI century against the Kiwis in Mount Maunganui in 2020. He joins an elite list that features Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Virat Kohli, and Shreyas Iyer. 4. Rohit Sharma completes 7000 ODI runs in Asia Rohit Sharma also attained a major milestone despite managing just 24 runs in Rajkot. The former Indian captain completed 7000 ODI runs in Asia, becoming the seventh player to do so. Before him, only 3 players each from India and Sri Lanka had achieved this. 5. New Zealand register biggest ODI run chase in India New Zealand registered their highest ODI run-chase in India with this victory. Their previous-highest chase was 283 against England in the opening match of the 2023 ODI World Cup in Ahmedabad. Mitchell was on 82 at that time, and he scored a century to lead his team to victory.
