Australia have announced their preliminary squad for the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, co-hosted by India and Sri Lanka, with several key players returning from injury. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Tim David, all currently recovering from fitness setbacks, have been included as selectors remain confident of their availability for the global tournament. The squad will once again be led by Mitchell Marsh, who continues as captain following Australia’s recent success in the shortest format. With a strong mix of experience and youth, the selection reflects Australia’s intent to field a balanced side capable of adapting to different conditions in the subcontinent. The tournament will see Australia play their Group B matches in Colombo and Pallekele, where spin-friendly conditions are expected to play a major role. Keeping this in mind, selectors have leaned towards a spin-heavy combination for the marquee event. Cummins, Hazlewood and David on the road to recovery Pat Cummins, who is recovering from a back injury, has played limited cricket recently, featuring only in the third Ashes Test in Adelaide. The fast bowler is scheduled to undergo a scan later this month, which will help determine his final inclusion in the World Cup squad. At the same time, Josh Hazlewood has been sidelined due to Achilles soreness following a hamstring issue that ruled him out of the Ashes. Chair of selectors George Bailey expressed optimism over the trio’s recovery, stating that all three players are “tracking well” and are expected to be fit in time for the tournament. Selector’s view and squad balance for the T20 WC 2026 “The T20 side has enjoyed a long run of recent success which enabled the panel to choose a balance of players across the variety of conditions Sri Lanka and India may present,” Bailey said. He added that since this is only a preliminary squad, changes can still be made ahead of the official submission deadline if required. The squad also marks the return of Cameron Green and Cooper Connolly, who missed the recent T20I series against India earlier this summer. Josh Inglis has been named as the sole wicketkeeper for the tournament. Mitchell Owen and Ben Dwarshuis have missed out on selection. Australia will announce a separate squad for the three-match T20I series against Pakistan, which will take place before the World Cup, at a later date.
