Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announced the renaming of Multai town to ‘Multapi’ during his visit to Betul. The announcement was made at the foundation stone-laying ceremony of a medical college, held in the presence of Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda. The Chief Minister stated that Multai MLA Chandrashekhar Deshmukh submitted the proposal for renaming, and the state government will take it forward. Multai residents appreciate renaming decision Following the Chief Minister’s announcement, an atmosphere of enthusiasm prevails in Multai town. Residents, who had long demanded the name change citing its historical and religious significance, have welcomed the decision. Citizens, social organisations and religious leaders expressed gratitude to the Chief Minister. Multai’s ancient name and significance Scholar Pandit Saurabh Joshi said that in ancient times, Multai was known as ‘Multapi’, meaning the origin of the Tapti River. As the Tapti, one of India’s major rivers, originates here, Multai holds deep religious and cultural importance. Locals believe restoring the name ‘Multapi’ will strengthen the city’s historical identity. Thousands of devotees visit every year for the darshan and worship of Mother Tapti, and the name change is expected to give a boost to religious tourism.
