At 1 AM on Sunday late night, on the Mortakka bridge located on the Khandwa-Indore road, an ash-laden dumper collided with two cars. The collision was so severe that one car bounced, broke 3-foot high the railing, and fell 50 feet down into the Narmada river. Fishermen present there safely rescued the car driver. They showed courage, immediately went into the water, opened the car’s door, and safely rescued the driver. The front part of the dumper hung from the bridge. Dumper driver suspected of falling asleep Another car was also damaged in the accident. Its driver told the police that the bridge is narrow and everyone was driving in their lane. It is suspected that the driver had dozed off. This is why he hit the car, causing it to bounce and fall into the river. After this, the second car directly collided with the dumper. Rescue operation ran for hours Upon receiving information about the accident, Mortakka police outpost and Barwah police reached the spot. A crane was called, and the rescue operation began. The operation continued from 1:30 AM to 8 AM, after which the car was pulled out of the river with the help of a crane. Ban on heavy vehicles, but tippers are exempt After the accident, there was a long traffic jam on the bridge. Traffic was diverted from the aqueduct bridge. Traffic could only normalise after 8 AM. The movement of heavy vehicles is prohibited on Mortakka Bridge, but the Collector has granted exemption to ash tippers and bulkers, considering them ‘essential services’.
