Groom demands ₹20 lakh before pheras:Returns with baraat after refusal; prompting bride’s family to block the busy Chhatarpur–Nowgong road

A groom in Chhatarpur demanded ₹20 lakh from the bride’s family before the wedding vows. When the family said they could not pay, the groom left the wedding pavilion with the baraat. Angry over this, the bride’s relatives blocked the Chhatarpur–Naogaon road on Monday. Police have filed a case against eight people. The incident happened late on Sunday night in the Orchha Road police station area. The bride, an MBA student, was set to marry Gaurav Kushwaha, son of Ramesh Kushwaha of Deri Road, Chhatarpur. The bride’s family had agreed to pay ₹10 lakh. They had already given ₹6.5 lakh in cash and dowry items during the Tilak and other ceremonies. The remaining amount was to be paid on the wedding day. The garland exchange was completed, but when it was time for the vows, the groom and his family suddenly demanded an extra ₹20 lakh. Bride said – suddenly they started demanding 20 lakh

The departure of the groom and the wedding procession from the mandap caused outrage among the bride’s family. The angry family members blocked the Chhatarpur-Naugaon road. Police arrived on receiving information and cleared the blockade after persuasion. Deepak Yadav, who was present at the spot, informed that a case is being registered against 8 people under dowry harassment and other relevant sections based on the complaint of the girl’s family.
