Jemima Rodrigues, one of India’s Women’s World Cup winners, has withdrawn from the remainder of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) to stand by her close friend and teammate Smriti Mandhana. Mandhana’s wedding, scheduled for November 23, had to be postponed after her father suddenly fell ill, prompting Jemima to stay back in India during this difficult time. Jemima had travelled to India for a short planned break about 10 days ago, following the Brisbane Heat vs Hobart Hurricanes match. She was expected to return to the WBBL this week, but due to the unexpected situation, she requested her franchise for permission to miss the entire season. The club immediately supported her decision and granted her leave. Her gesture has earned admiration from many, including Bollywood actor Sunil Shetty, who praised Jemima for choosing to remain with Smriti during a family emergency, calling it the mark of a true friend and teammate. Brisbane Heat accepts the World Champions’ request to withdraw from WBBL Women’s Big Bash League franchise, Brisbane Heat said in a statement, “Jemima Rodrigues had requested release from the remaining WBBL matches, which we have accepted. She had come to India for Smriti Mandhana’s wedding, but due to health issues of Mandhana’s father, when the ceremony was postponed, she stayed there with her.” The franchise also said further that they fully support Jemima’s decision. She will stay in India to be with her fellow player; therefore, she will not participate in the remaining four matches. Bollywood actor Sunil Shetty praised Jemimah and their friendship Veteran Bollywood actor Suniel Shetty wrote a note on Friday praising Jemimah Rodrigues. Suniel Shetty, who is also the father-in-law of Team India cricketer KL Rahul, posted a newspaper clipping on X and wrote – ”Read this article early in the morning and it touched my heart.” He further said – ”Jemimah stands with Smriti. This is how real teammates are.
