A series of incidents in Jabalpur has exposed the growing influence of a ‘lady gang’ involved in abducting young women and assaulting them while recording videos for social media. On Saturday, a young woman reached the Gwari Ghat police station and lodged a complaint stating that she was beaten up by members of the gang and her video was made viral. The assault took place on the banks of Gwari Ghat. Complaint leads to arrests Taking the viral video seriously, police arrested three accused, two 17-year-old minors and one young woman. The minors have been sent to a juvenile home, while the adult accused has been sent to jail. In the video, a minor girl is seen pulling the victim’s hair and slapping her, while another woman standing nearby recorded the incident on her phone. Trend of violence for social media fame Police said such incidents reflect a growing pattern where young people resort to violence for online popularity. Women too are using social media videos to assert dominance in their local areas. Earlier, on November 15, four girls from Adhartaal had similarly beaten up another young woman and filmed the assault. When the video went viral on November 22, police took cognizance of the matter. Accused had no criminal records Gwari Ghat Police Station in-charge Subhashchand Baghel said the gang used to abduct girls at knifepoint, take them to secluded spots, assault them and make videos. So far, no criminal records have been found against the arrested girls. Police have detained all three accused based on the evidence from the viral clips.
