A 47-year-old man from Dhar, Madhya Pradesh, weighing 115 kg, got a new life after a successful kidney transplant at Medanta Hospital in Indore. The surgery was complex because of his obesity and the unusual fact that the donor — his wife — had eight stones in her kidney. Despite several risks, doctors managed to remove the stones and transplant the kidney in the same operation. Both husband and wife are now healthy. Kidney transplant on 115 kg patient The patient, Mehmood Mohammad (47), works in a transport company. He has two sons and two daughters. Among his family members, he is the heaviest, weighing over 110 kg. In 2018, Mehmood started suffering from kidney problems. After consultations in Dhar and Indore, doctors found that both his kidneys had failed. 3 years of dialysis Treatment began, but his condition did not improve. By 2022, dialysis had to be started. At first, it was done occasionally, but later it became more frequent. The process continued for three years, and his weight remained above 110 kg. Wife wanted to donate kidney, husband refused During dialysis, Mehmood’s wife Najma (45) offered to donate her kidney. However, Mehmood refused, worried about her health. He said dialysis gave him some relief and did not want to put her at risk. Doctors explained that if the donor’s kidney matched and her health was stable, there would be no harm. They said that after proper medical tests and approval from the State Organ and Tissue Transplant Organisation (SOTO), the transplant could be safely done within the family. Wife finally convinced her husband After years of dialysis, Najma finally convinced her husband that a transplant was the only way to save his life. In August 2025, the couple went to Medanta Hospital in Indore. Doctors found that Mehmood weighed 114 kg, which made the surgery risky. 34 kg weight difference between donor and recipient Doctors noted that Najma weighed only 70 kg, creating a 34 kg difference — a serious challenge for transplant surgery. The doctors advised Mehmood to lose weight before the procedure. Lost 8 kg before surgery With the doctors’ help and medication, Mehmood reduced his weight from 114 kg to 106 kg. On 1 September 2025, both were prepared for the kidney transplant. 8 stones found in wife’s kidney During Najma’s medical examination, doctors discovered eight stones in one of her kidneys. Normally, patients are given at least three months to recover after stone removal before donating a kidney. However, doctors came up with a unique plan. 2 procedures done together Both Mehmood and Najma were taken to the operation theatre at the same time. The doctors first removed Najma’s kidney, then took out all eight stones using a flexible endoscope. The same kidney was immediately transplanted into Mehmood. This approach avoided an extra surgery, saved time, and reduced expenses. Najma did not need a separate procedure for stone removal. Successful surgery and recovery According to Dr Jai Singh Arora, the surgeon, the case was highly challenging but successful. Mehmood’s weight, even at 106 kg, posed a risk. Yet, both surgeries went smoothly, and the couple recovered well. After two and a half months, Mehmood’s weight has reduced to 96 kg. His creatinine levels are normal, and he follows a healthy lifestyle with regular morning and evening walks. Doctor explains the medical details Dr Anshul Agarwal, Urologist and Kidney Transplant Surgeon, said: “The donor’s left kidney had 7–8 stones, each 3–4 mm in size. After removing the kidney, the stones were cleared through the urinary tract using a flexible endoscope. The same kidney was transplanted into the husband on the operating table. Both patients now have normal kidney function.” Financial struggles during treatment Mehmood’s brother, Maqsood Mohammad, said the family spent over Rs 7 lakh on treatment. Earlier dialysis alone had cost them more than Rs 3 lakh. They also took a loan on a truck to afford the transplant. He added that the family received only Rs 60,000 from the Chief Minister’s Fund, which was not enough. He appealed to the government to increase financial aid for transplant patients so that others do not face similar hardship. Story of courage and love This case stands out for its medical success and emotional strength. Despite health risks and financial challenges, Najma donated a kidney full of stones to save her husband’s life. Thanks to the dedication of doctors at Medanta Hospital, both are now healthy and leading a normal life.
