Two brothers from Madhya Pradesh allegedly consumed poison in Nainital, Uttarakhand, on Thursday. One of them died, while the other is fighting for life. The incident has taken a new turn after their maternal uncle accused their paternal aunt of driving them to suicide for property reasons. Uncle’s serious allegations Ambika Pandey, the boys’ maternal uncle, arrived from Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, at the Nainital Postmortem House on Saturday. He claimed that after the death of their parents, the brothers’ paternal aunt had her eyes on their inherited land. According to him, the aunt, along with her sisters and other relatives, repeatedly harassed the brothers. Unable to bear the pressure, the boys left home after an argument on 26 October. Said they were going to Pune, ended up in Uttarakhand Before leaving, the brothers told their uncle that they were heading to Pune. However, it remains unclear how they reached Uttarakhand. Both allegedly consumed poison in a forest area near Nainital. The elder brother, Shivesh Mishra (22), died, while the younger, Brijesh Mishra (20), is undergoing treatment in Nainital. Uncle yet to file complaint The maternal uncle said that no police complaint has been registered so far. He stated that the family would file a case after returning to Madhya Pradesh. How the brothers were found On 30 October, police found the two brothers lying unconscious in a forest along Baluti Road in the Kathgodam police station area. Local labourers had spotted them and alerted the police. Both were rushed to Sushila Tiwari Hospital in Haldwani, where doctors declared the elder brother dead. The younger is still being treated. Mental stress after parents’ suicide Initial police findings suggest that both brothers were under severe mental stress after their parents’ deaths six months ago. Their parents had died by suicide following a family dispute. The trauma, combined with unemployment, had pushed the brothers into depression. They had reportedly left home in search of work in Pune. Uncle recalls last phone call Ambika Pandey said that on 26 October, both brothers had called him to say there had been a fight at home and they were leaving. Despite his attempts to calm them down, they refused to stay and left, claiming they were going to Pune. Four days later, on 30 October, he received news that they had consumed poison in Uttarakhand. He had tried to contact them several times in between but got no response. Harassment over land ownership The uncle alleged that the brothers were being mentally tortured by their paternal aunt and the in-laws of their deceased sister, Mamta Mishra. The harassment was allegedly aimed at seizing eight acres of ancestral land in their village. He said this constant pressure had pushed both brothers into despair and forced them to leave home. Financial struggles and last rites Ambika Pandey said the family is financially weak. Due to lack of funds, he could not take Shivesh’s body back to Madhya Pradesh. The last rites were therefore performed in Haldwani itself. He added that Brijesh Mishra is still in hospital, fighting for his life.
