The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) conducted a raid at the Jabalpur District Hospital (Victoria Hospital) on Thursday afternoon, seizing several documents dating from 2009 to 2020. The operation was led by DSP Swarnjeet Singh Dhami, who is heading the ongoing investigation. Complaint over financial irregularities triggered action According to reports, the raid was prompted by complaints of alleged financial irregularities at the hospital. Despite repeated requests for official records, hospital authorities allegedly delayed or avoided sharing them with investigators. Health Department ignored 17 official letters Between 2022 and 2025, the EOW reportedly sent 17 letters to the state health department seeking clarification and documentation related to the allegations. However, officials neither responded to the correspondence nor provided the requested information. The raid was subsequently carried out in the presence of the Civil Surgeon. EOW sources indicated that several senior officials of the health department could come under the scanner as the investigation progresses. Probe may also cover fake degree allegations It is also suspected that the raid may be linked to complaints about employees allegedly securing jobs using fake educational degrees. This issue was even raised during the Monsoon Session of the Madhya Pradesh Assembly, when Congress MLA Lakhan Ghanghoria accused a hospital officer of possessing a forged qualification. However, these claims are yet to be officially confirmed. A hospital with colonial-era legacy Established in 1876, the Victoria Hospital was Jabalpur’s first major healthcare facility, named after Queen Victoria. During the British era, the red building was designated for British officers, while the white building was used to treat Indian patients. The District Hospital continues to function in the same historic premises today.
