Congress staged a silent protest at Rajgarh District Hospital on Thursday afternoon after more than two dozen children died due to cough syrup in Chhindwara. Congress District President Priyavrat Singh held a picture of Mahatma Gandhi and said the protest was to honour the children’s souls and demand strict action against those responsible. Initially, the party set up a tent in the hospital premises, but the administration removed it, saying it violated rules. Undeterred, Congress workers, including Priyavrat Singh, continued the protest under the open sky. SDM Nidhi Bhardwaj and Station In-charge Akhilesh Verma arrived to stop the protest inside the hospital, but the leaders refused to move. Priyavrat Singh said they were willing to shift outside, provided that no political protests or microphones are allowed in hospital premises in the future. At the beginning of the protest, Congress had put up a tent in the hospital premises, which the administration removed, stating it was against the rules. After this, all the office bearers and workers, including Priyavrat Singh, sat on protest under the open sky. SDM Nidhi Bhardwaj and Station In-charge Akhilesh Verma arrived at the spot. They tried to stop the Congress leaders from protesting in the hospital premises. However, Congress leaders refused to leave their spot. District President Priyavrat Singh said that they are ready to move out of the hospital premises and sit outside, provided that in the future, no party is allowed to protest or use microphones in the hospital premises. BJP officials also became active As soon as they received information about the protest, BJP officials also became active. BJP General Secretary Devisingh Sondhia and Municipal President Vinod Sahu reached the CMHO office and registered their objection to the protest in the hospital premises. They urged the administration to pay attention to the problems faced by the patients. It was only after BJP’s objection that the administration removed the tent. It is noteworthy that children have died in Chhindwara district of Madhya Pradesh due to the consumption of cough syrup from the same company. The government has ordered an investigation into the matter and some people associated with the company manufacturing the syrup have been arrested. Additionally, action is also ongoing against those doctors who continuously prescribed this medicine to patients.
