The Employees’ State Insurance Corporation (ESIC) Medical College in Indore has received the long-awaited Letter of Permission (LoP) from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to begin its MBBS course. The approval allows the institution to admit 50 students starting from the 2025–26 academic session. Although the college had applied for 100 MBBS seats, the NMC approved only 50, citing administrative delays and incomplete facilities observed during inspection. Officials said that some faculty positions and infrastructural requirements were not fully operational at the time of the NMC’s visit, leading to partial approval. State’s first ESIC Medical College The Indore campus is Madhya Pradesh’s first ESIC medical college, established under the Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of India. Located in Nandanagar, the 65-acre campus includes a six-storey hospital with 400 beds, of which 20 are dedicated to emergency services. The hospital’s lower floors house Outpatient Departments (OPDs), while the upper levels accommodate classrooms, lecture halls, and administrative offices. Officials said the hospital is now fully functional, with a significant patient load, ensuring that medical students will have ample clinical exposure once the MBBS program begins. Infrastructure and academic facilities ready The college administration has emphasized that all academic and medical facilities are now in place. Smart classrooms, digital libraries, and separate hostels for students and faculty have been set up. Laboratories, a blood bank, and diagnostic departments have also been developed in accordance with NMC norms. A total of 102 faculty members have been recruited to support teaching and clinical departments. We had applied for 100 seats and were prepared for the same. The approval of 50 is a good start, and we will work toward securing the remaining seats soon. said Dr. U. Rajesh Sangram, Dean, ESIC Medical College. Expanding specialties and hospital services The hospital has been officially renamed ‘ESIC Medical College and Hospital, Indore’, replacing its earlier title of ‘ESIC Hospital’. It currently provides super-specialty services in cardiology, medical oncology, and urology, adding to its existing DNB courses in medicine, surgery, anesthesia, and gynecology. Officials said that with the addition of MBBS, the institution will function as a full-fledged teaching hospital, expanding both its academic and clinical reach. PM Modi Virtually Inaugurated the Campus Prime Minister Narendra Modi had virtually inaugurated the ESIC Medical College and Hospital on October 29, 2024, marking the beginning of a new chapter in Indore’s medical education landscape. Spread across modern infrastructure and equipped with upgraded facilities, the college is expected to bridge healthcare and medical education under the ESIC framework, benefiting insured workers and their families across Madhya Pradesh. Strengthening Indore’s medical education hub The launch of MBBS courses at ESIC Medical College positions Indore as a major centre for medical education in central India, joining the ranks of MGM Medical College and SAIMS Indore. With its strong clinical base, upgraded hospital services, and growing faculty strength, ESIC is expected to enhance both public health delivery and medical training capacity in the region.
