This Navratri, India saw more vehicles sold than ever before! A big reason for this boom is the government’s decision to lower the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on vehicles. Reflecting on the robust, auto retail performance, Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (Fada), vice president, Sai Giridhar says, “Navratri 2025 will go down as one of the most memorable chapters in India’s automobile retail journey — a true ‘Bachat Utsav’ unleashed by the visionary GST 2.0 reform announced by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji.” GST Cut Makes a Big Difference The GST, which is a tax on almost everything we buy, was reduced on cars and bikes just before the festival. This meant that vehicles became cheaper, making them more attractive to buyers. How much GST was reduced? People Ready to Spend Navratri is considered a lucky time to buy new things in India. With the lower prices, many families decided it was the perfect time to finally get home their dream machines. As a result, India’s largest automobile manufacturer, Maruti Suzuki India (MSI) recorded sale of almost 21 cars every minute throughout the first day of Navratri on 22 September 2025 (the day from which new GST rates took effect.) This translated to 30,000 deliveries on a single day. While, the South Korea-based auto major, Hyundai Motor India sold eight PVs every minute on September 22. This translated to over 11,000 on a daily basis. And, India’s very own Tata Motors clocked sales of seven units of PVs every minute on Navratri’s first day which translated to the 10,000 figure for the day. *Mercedes-Benz India’s tally is a count every 6 minutes. For the rest of all other companies, it is for every one minute. Coming back to Maruti, in the first three days of Navratri, the Japan-based auto maker had clocked sale of 75,000 PV units. That’s 25,000 sales per day and 17 units every minute. Within first four days, the sale of small cars doubled as compared to the same period a year ago. For the whole of September 2025, India’s largest automobile manufacturer clocked sale of more than 2 lakh units. The company had retailed 85,000 vehicles last Navratri. While, domestic dispatch of Hyundai’s vehicles to dealers stood at 51,547 units in the whole month of September. Homegrown auto major Mahindra Mahindra’s sale stood at 56,233 units overall in September. Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 26,847 units in India. JSW MG Motor India sold 6,728 units in September 2025. While, Nissan Motor India said in a statement, “Domestic wholesale sales for the month stood at 1,652 units. The sales momentum was significantly supported by the Government of India’s revised GST slabs.” Saurabh Vatsa, managing director, Nissan Motor India, said: “September was an exciting month for Nissan Motor India.” On other hand, the luxury auto maker, Mercedes-Benz India, sold over 2,500 cars during Navratri alone. Throughout the 9-day period, the Germany based auto giant one car every six minutes. More Sales Expected Experts believe that the good times for the auto industry will continue. With the economy doing well and people feeling positive, even more vehicles are expected to be sold in the coming months.
