More than 200 production units at the Readymade Garment and Fashion Designing Cluster in Jabalpur’s Gohalpur area remained shut for eight days due to a power outage, bringing operations to a standstill. The disruption left thousands of artisans facing a crisis of employment and wages, while traders suffered losses worth lakhs of rupees. According to information, power supply to the cluster had remained disrupted since June 9. Electricity was restored only on the night of June 17 after continuous complaints and efforts. The problem was reportedly caused by a fault in an underground power cable during rainfall, and it took the power department nine days to rectify it. Machines remained shut for 8 days Around 200 manufacturing units are currently operating in the Readymade Garment and Fashion Designing Cluster at Gohalpur, providing direct and indirect employment to thousands of workers. With no electricity available, machines remained idle and production came to a complete halt. Cluster Managing Director Deepak Jain said it was a matter of serious concern that a technical fault took eight days to repair. He said traders suffered losses worth lakhs of rupees every day during the outage, while a large number of artisans were left without work. Readymade Garment Cluster at a Glance The cluster was developed 12 years ago Deepak Jain said the power department’s technical capabilities need to be strengthened further. He stressed that modern resources and a faster repair mechanism should be developed to prevent such situations in the future. He said the cluster’s infrastructure was developed around 12 years ago. At that time, power cables were laid underground using advanced technology. However, faults in these underground cables during recent rainfall affected the entire electricity system. Electricity officials said – it was a technical fault According to electricity department officials, moisture and water seepage into the underground cables during rainfall caused the technical fault.
