A grand Bhasma Aarti was held early Thursday morning at the world-famous Shree Mahakaleshwar Temple in Ujjain, where Lord Mahakal was adorned in an elaborate and divine form following traditional rituals. After the temple doors opened at 4 AM, priests carried out the prescribed worship and abhishek ceremonies in accordance with age-old customs. Holy Abhishek performed with water and Panchamrit The temple priests first offered prayers to all the deities enshrined in the sanctum sanctorum before performing the Jalabhishek of Lord Mahakal. The ritual was followed by a Panchamrit Abhishek using a sacred mixture of milk, curd, ghee, sugar, and fruit juices. With the ringing of the first temple bell, “Hari Om” water was ceremonially offered to the deity, after which the traditional camphor aarti was performed. Lord Mahakal adorned in Jatadhari form Following the camphor aarti, Lord Mahakal was offered bhang, sandalwood paste, a silver crescent ornament, and rose flowers. The deity was then decorated with a silver crown and Tripundra markings, presenting the revered Jatadhari (matted-hair) form. Once the adornment was completed, the Jyotirlinga was covered with cloth and the sacred Bhasma (ash) ritual was performed. Royal adornment after Bhasma offering After the sacred ash was applied, Lord Mahakal was dressed in a regal form using bhang, dry fruits, ornaments, and fragrant flowers. The deity was adorned with a silver Sheshnag crown, a silver Mundmala, Rudraksha beads, and a specially crafted garland of roses. Fruits and sweets were then offered as bhog. Devotees gather in large numbers A large number of devotees attended the Bhasma Aarti and sought the blessings of Baba Mahakal. As per tradition, the sacred ash was offered by the Maha Nirvani Akhara. According to religious belief, after the Bhasma offering, Lord Mahakal manifests from the formless to a visible form, granting devotees divine darshan.
