Indore is witnessing a sharp rise in the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs), with registrations increasing significantly in the first five months of 2026. According to transport department data, 11,571 EVs were registered between January and May, a 53% increase compared with 7,573 registrations during the same period last year. The biggest growth has been seen in the electric car segment. A total of 1,118 electric cars were registered in the first five months of 2026, nearly double the 582 recorded a year earlier. Electric two-wheelers also posted strong growth, with registrations rising from 5,021 to 8,977, an increase of 78%. As a result, EVs now account for 15% of all vehicle registrations in Indore, up from 11% last year. What is driving the shift? Rising petrol and diesel prices continue to encourage buyers to switch to electric mobility. Improved battery technology and longer driving ranges have boosted consumer confidence. Expansion of charging infrastructure has made EV ownership more convenient. Lower running and maintenance costs remain a key attraction for buyers. Changing consumer preferences Demand for alternative-fuel vehicles is growing steadily. Alongside EVs, hybrid models and petrol-CNG vehicles are also gaining popularity. Industry experts say buyers are increasingly prioritizing fuel efficiency and lower ownership costs when choosing a vehicle.
