India’s left-arm spin bowling all-rounder Manav Suthar made his Test debut against Afghanistan. He took a wicket in his very first over. An Indian has achieved this feat after 25 years. Suthar, a resident of Sri Ganganagar district of Rajasthan picked up 3 wickets on Day 2. His family travelled to watch Manav play his first match for India, but due to superstition, they travelled back home. After Stumps, Manav called his parents and his sister to congratulate them and thank them for their support. Jagdish Suthar, a retired Physical Education teacher, had travelled all the way to Mullanpur with his family to watch his elder child Manav make his Test debut for India but left for home without watching his son’s on-field exploits on second day of the match against Afghanistan on Sunday. Suthar made a brilliant debut as he had the Afghanistan batters tied in knots with figures of 3 for 21 in 15.5 overs. “Yes, me, my wife, my daughter Mansi (Manav’s younger sister) had come to watch his debut. I can’t describe how it felt seeing him get the Test Cap yesterday. However, today we had come back home as we were all nervous and a bit superstitious watching him live in action from the stadium,” the soft-spoken Jagdish Suthar told PTI. Manav Suthar called his family after his 3 wickets After Stumps on Day 2, Manav called his parents, and the BCCI’s official handle shared a video of the youngster talking to his family. They all congratulated each other, with Manav’s family visibly moved. His father advised him to keep working hard. Joined academy at the age of 12 Suthar joined the academy at the age of 12 under the coaching of Deepak Sir and Vinod Sir. His first big break came when he got a place in Rajasthan’s Under-14 team. This motivated him that a career could be made in cricket. People advised him to focus on studies Suthar said in an interview with Jiohotstar, “Success in cricket is not easy in a country like India. He mentioned that many people advised him to focus on his studies and said that there was no scope in cricket. He did not give up and continued to work hard. After a good performance in the domestic season and excellent play for India-A, his name came into discussion.” Excellent performance in 2022-23 Ranji, IPL debut in 2024 In the 2022-23 Ranji Trophy season, Suthar took 39 wickets in just 6 matches. In the 2025-26 season, he also bagged 18 wickets in just 3 matches. Based on this excellent form, he earned a place in the India Emerging and India ‘A’ teams. He was bought by Gujarat Titans for IPL 2024 at a base price of 20 lakh rupees. He also made his IPL debut in the same season, conceding 26 runs in 2 overs without taking any wickets. He could not play a single match in 2025, whereas he played 4 matches in 2026. He has only 2 wickets to his name in the IPL. Sister informed that he has been selected for the Indian team Suthar said that he was in his room when his sister called. His sister had seen the squad announcement and informed him that his name was included in the Indian team. All family members became emotional. Suthar said, ‘This is the best experience of my life. Being selected for India after years of hard work is the greatest joy.’ Suthar’s favourite players are Yuvraj Singh and R Ashwin. The variations in their bowling inspire him.
