Officials say illegal mining operators are using alternative routes Devri Chambal Gharial Centre Superintendent Shyam Singh Chauhan said several teams have been formed to crack down on illegal sand mining. According to him, mining activities have reduced, but those involved are familiar with local routes and often avoid checkpoints by using internal roads. He said authorities are identifying these alternative routes and will take action to block them. Supreme Court monitoring illegal mining issue The incident comes amid ongoing action against illegal sand mining in the National Chambal Gharial Sanctuary area. The Supreme Court recently criticised the governments of Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh for failing to effectively curb illegal mining and the use of unregistered vehicles. The court directed the states to strengthen monitoring systems, install CCTV cameras and seize vehicles involved in illegal mining activities. During a hearing on May 20, the court described the problem as an “organised illegal mining network” and stressed that protecting the environment and wildlife is a constitutional responsibility of state governments.
