Thousands of farmers protesting against land acquisition for the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI)’s Eastern Bypass project and the Indore-Manmad railway line staged a demonstration outside the Indore Collectorate at Ganji Compound on Monday. During the protest, a disabled farmer rolled on the hot road in a semi-clothed state to express his opposition. The intense heat also affected two farmers, who fell ill and were sent to hospital for treatment. Farmers arrive prepared for long protest Farmers from villages along Khandwa Road and nearby areas participated in the demonstration. They said they would continue protesting until both projects are cancelled. Many families brought flour, food supplies, and other essentials with them, indicating their readiness to continue the protest for several days if necessary. Women and children were also present at the protest site. Farmers from Simrol, Tillore Khurd, Faraspur, Khudel and nearby villages formed the core of the demonstration. Protesters said they would cook meals and stay at the site if their demands were not met. View photos of farmers’ protest Protest continues since morning Farmers have been protesting since morning against the proposed Eastern Ring Road project. Large numbers of protesters occupied sections of the road near the Collectorate. According to the farmers, they have held several demonstrations in the past, but their demands were never addressed. As a result, they have now begun an indefinite sit-in protest. Officials fail to convince protesters Administrative and police officials attempted to persuade the protesters to end the demonstration, but farmers refused to leave. They argued that similar assurances had been given during previous protests and were later forgotten. This time, they said, they would remain at the site until a permanent solution is reached. High Court ordered status quo Last month, the High Court directed authorities to maintain the status quo regarding the project while hearing a public interest litigation filed by the Bharatiya Kisan Union. The court also issued notices to NHAI and the administration as part of the ongoing proceedings related to the land acquisition dispute.
