After the death of elderly Devendra Goyal who consumed poison at the Sheopur Collectorate public hearing, there was massive uproar on Wednesday. The Agrawal community along with Congress MLA Babu Jandel blocked the road by placing the body at Jai Stambh Chowk. After a protest that lasted about four and a half hours, the administration had to relent. The Collector has immediately removed Tehsildar Manisha Mishra from her post, following which the sit-in ended around 1:30 PM. See Pictures Consumed poison after not being heard The deceased Devendra Goyal had arrived at the Collectorate’s public hearing around 11 AM on Tuesday with his complaint. His allegation was that his own relatives had usurped his shop. He had already made several rounds to officials regarding this matter, but no hearing took place. When his plea was not heard this time either, he became distressed and consumed poison right there in the Collectorate. He was admitted to the hospital in critical condition, where he died during treatment. Protest with body placed since 9 AM, city came to a standstill On Wednesday morning at 9 AM, a large number of people from the Agarwal community and local citizens reached Jai Stambh. They placed the body on the road and blocked traffic. In protest of the incident, the main markets of the city were kept completely closed. Congress MLA Babu Jandel, who reached the spot, also sat on dharna. He alleged that when the elderly man talked about suicide, the Tehsildar lied saying the Collector was not present. Referring to a video, the MLA said that Tehsildar Manisha Mishra was speaking insensitively saying, “He has come drunk, he is doing drama.” It was due to this helplessness that the elderly man gave up his life. Following this, MLA Babu Jandel reached the Kotwali police station along with the family members and people from the community, where he submitted a written application to register a murder case against the Tehsildar. Collector Sheela Dahima said that the Tehsildar has been removed. Strong arrangements are being made to ensure such incidents do not occur in the future. Now our effort will be that people coming to the public hearing do not have to run around again and their problems are resolved immediately. Immediate financial aid announced for victim’s family Immediate ₹2 lakh assistance has been provided to the deceased’s family. A proposal for additional relief will be sent to the Chief Minister, while the son has been assured of a government job. The Agrawal Samaj has also announced ₹11 lakh support for the family.
