In Vidisha, Madhya Pradesh, 42-year-old, Sheenu Varghese was found dead at his home, where his mother, Mariyamma Varghese, had reportedly been sitting beside the body for five days, praying in the hope that her son would come back to life. A Bible had been placed on Sheenu’s chest. The incident came to light after neighbours noticed a strong foul smell and blood seeping out from under the door. According to the Civil Line Police, Sheenu worked in fashion designing in Mumbai. Following his father’s death, he had been living with his mother in Vidisha for the past year. Mariyamma is a retired teacher from a private school. Milk vendor Sachin Lodhi, who arrived to deliver milk on Monday morning, grew suspicious after sensing a foul smell coming from the house and spotting blood under the door. When he questioned Mariyamma, she reportedly said, “Everyone together killed my son. Sheenu is dead.” Neighbour Dinesh Sahu said the foul smell had been spreading in the area for the last two to three days, but residents assumed an animal had died nearby. Since the woman appeared to be carrying on with her daily routine, no one suspected anything unusual inside the house. He had been living with them for some time to take care of his mother, and was also unwell. Mother kept praying in hope of bringing son back to life Police investigation revealed that after her son’s death, Mariyama did not inform anyone. She believed that by keeping the Bible and praying continuously, her son would come back to life. This is why the body was kept at home, and no last rites were performed. Mother kept preventing police from entering the house Upon receiving information, Civil Line police station officers reached the spot. When police tried to enter the house, Mariyama attempted to stop them. She tried to close the door twice. After much persuasion, the police managed to enter. Sheenu’s body was found lying in the room. A Bible was placed on top of the body, and prayer-related items were present around it. According to police, the body was approximately five days old. A strong foul smell was emanating from it, and maggots had infested the body. Awaiting post-mortem report Civil Line police station in-charge Rajpal Singh Jadaun stated that the body has been sent for post-mortem.
