A 28-year-old man drowned while swimming in Bhopal’s Upper Lake (Bada Talab) on Saturday morning. According to his family, the youth had been regularly visiting the area near Sheetaldas ki Bagiya for swimming over the past few days. Locals nearby tried to rescue him, but he could not be saved. The deceased has been identified as Rahul Yadav (24), a resident of Kathputli Mohalla in Roshanpura under Shyamla Hills police station limits. As per the family, Rahul had gone for swimming in Upper Lake early Saturday morning with 3–4 friends. They received information about the incident around 6 am. After the post-mortem, police handed over the body to the family. The incident site is located at Upper Lake, Bhopal. The family has alleged that the ambulance reached the spot nearly 30 minutes late, which delayed medical assistance. Rahul was later taken to Hamidia Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The Shyamla Hills police station in-charge said that the youth had also been unwell for the past few days. Police have completed the post-mortem formalities and handed over the body to the family. An investigation into the incident is underway. 38 thousand people die from drowning every year According to a 2024 government report, around 38,000 people die every year in India due to drowning. In December 2024, Union Minister of State for Health Bharati Praveen had also stressed the need to develop a safety mechanism to prevent such accidents. Most drowning deaths in India occur in canals, rivers, ponds, water pits, or swimming pools. Around 24% of victims are between 5 and 14 years of age.
