A case of alleged assault and wrongful confinement of a patient’s attendant has surfaced at the Orthopaedic ward of Datia Medical College on Tuesday night. It is alleged that the distressed youth attempted to hang himself in the room. Upon receiving information, hospital outpost police arrived and broke open the lock to rescue the youth. According to police, Pradeep Pal, a resident of Bargay village, had come to the medical college for the treatment of his uncle. Eyewitnesses and family members alleged that Pradeep got into an argument with junior doctors over some issue. Following this, 6-7 junior doctors allegedly assaulted him and locked him inside the duty room. Youth allegedly locked inside room for nearly an hour According to family members, Pradeep remained confined inside the room for nearly an hour. During this time, he allegedly tore the curtain in the room and made a noose in an attempt to hang himself. Relatives and other patients present outside created a ruckus, leading to chaos inside the hospital premises. On receiving information, hospital outpost police rushed to the spot. Police first tried to get the door opened, but there was no response from inside. Seeing the seriousness of the situation, police broke the lock of the room and rescued the youth. Treatment affected, patients appealed for help Tension prevailed at the medical college till late night following the incident. Several patients reportedly faced difficulties in getting treatment. In some videos, patients and their relatives were seen pleading for help. Administration says – Matter has been resolved Medical College Superintendent Dr Arjun Singh refused to treat the allegations as serious. He said, “Nothing like this happened. The matter has been resolved mutually.” Both parties reached a settlement at the police station According to Datia ASP Sunil Kumar Shivhare, the dispute took place due to a misunderstanding between the attendant and the doctors. Both parties later reached a compromise at the police station. The ASP said the attendant wanted to take the patient away, but doctors refused. However, the family insisted and said they were ready to give a written statement that they were taking the patient on their own responsibility. The argument later escalated into a physical altercation.
