British pop star Dua Lipa has filed a lawsuit against ‌Samsung Electronics seeking at least $15 million (₹142 crore) in damages, accusing the South Korean tech giant of using her image without permission to market its television sets, reported, news agency, Reuters. Samsung puts Lipa’s photos on TV boxes The lawsuit alleges that Samsung put copyrighted ​images of the pop star on the front of cardboard boxes in which ​televisions were packed for retail sale. This aided the company to benefit in sales as this must have worked as an advertisement. The lawsuit was filed on Friday in the California federal court. Besides copyright and ‌trademark ⁠infringement, Dua Lipa has accused Samsung Electronics of breaching publicity rights as well. Image used by Samsung on TV boxes Fan says he bought TV because of Dua Lipa’s image on box: One netizen wrote on a social media post containing photos of Samsung TV boxes with Lipa’s image, “I wasn’t even planning on buying a TV but I saw the box so I decided to get it.” While, another wrote, “I’d get that TV just because Dua is on it.” The pop singer became aware of Samsung’s alleged ​copyright violations in June last year and demanded the company to stop using ​her ⁠image. But the electronics manufacturer repeatedly refused to do so, her lawyers said, according to the news agency.
