Legal activity has intensified in the high-profile Raja Raghuvanshi murder case in Shillong. After Sonam Raghuvanshi was granted bail, a lengthy hearing was held on the bail plea of her alleged partner and co-accused Raj Kushwaha. On Tuesday, the Shillong District and Sessions Court reserved its order after hearing arguments from both sides. The court is expected to deliver its decision within a day or two. Government lawyer Keshav Gautam said that hearings have also concluded on the pleas of three other accused Vishal Chauhan, Anand Kurmi and Akash Rajput. Raj’s lawyer Yobin said that a copy of the order is likely to be available within one to two days. In court, the defence argued that the main accused, Sonam, has already been granted bail. In such a situation, under the rule of ‘parity’, it would not be appropriate to keep Raj in jail. The defence maintained that if the accused believed to be the mastermind has received relief, the co-accused should also be given the same benefit. Anger in family after Sonam gets bail The court had granted bail to Sonam Raghuvanshi citing technical lapses in the police investigation. After her release from jail, the family of the deceased, Raja Raghuvanshi, expressed deep grief and anger. Raja’s mother, Uma Raghuvanshi, called it a miscarriage of justice and urged the Chief Minister to intervene. The family said that if key conspirators are released, witnesses could be at risk. All eyes now on the verdict Following Sonam’s release, the upcoming decision on Raj’s bail is likely to determine the direction of the case. If Raj is also granted bail, Raja’s family is preparing to approach the High Court. For now, all eyes remain on the Shillong court’s reserved order.
