A 28-year-old woman was trampled to death by an elephant in Anuppur district on Sunday afternoon, while her husband and six-year-old son were injured in the attack. The incident took place around 3 pm near Bholgarh village when the family was returning home from their fields. Family attacked on forest route According to the injured husband, Ramanuj Paw, he was walking back to the village with his wife Premwati Paw and their son Deepak when an elephant suddenly appeared on the forest path. The family attempted to flee, but the elephant charged toward them. Woman thrown and trampled Ramanuj said he tried to save his son by picking him up, but the elephant struck his wife with its trunk, throwing her to the ground. The child was also flung from his mother’s arms due to the impact. As Ramanuj ran with his son, the elephant pushed him down with its trunk and attempted to trample him, leaving him with multiple injuries. The elephant then attacked Premwati again and crushed her, leading to her death on the spot. Elephant retreated after villagers raised alarm After the attack, the elephant remained in the area for some time and retreated into the forest only after villagers raised an alarm. Injured under treatment, area on alert With the help of locals, the injured were taken to a nearby hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. The incident has created panic in the area. Forest department teams are monitoring the elephant’s movement. Recurring human-elephant conflict in region Elephant attacks remain a serious concern in Anuppur district. According to forest department records, 16 people have died in elephant attacks between 2011 and 2026. In the past 120 days alone, four deaths have been reported in the Anuppur and Jaithari forest ranges.
