The auction of liquor shops for the financial year 2026–27 in Madhya Pradesh has significantly boosted the state treasury. Once again, Indore—often referred to as “Mini Mumbai”—has demonstrated its economic strength by contributing the highest additional revenue among all districts. Indore alone generated an additional ₹432.74 crore for the government, the highest in the state. Record jump in auction value The auction of 173 liquor shops in Indore has reshaped revenue dynamics this year. In the previous financial year (2025–26), the total annual value of these shops stood at ₹1,752.02 crore. This year, bids surged past ₹2,184.76 crore. This marks a record increase of 24.70%. Indore’s dominance is evident as its additional revenue is more than three times that of Dhar district, which ranked second with ₹126.54 crore. Even major districts like Gwalior and Raisen lagged far behind. Nightlife and Urban expansion drive demand Experts believe that the high bids in Indore are not coincidental. The city’s rapid geographical expansion and the development of areas like Rau, Sanwer, and the Super Corridor have played a crucial role. Additionally, a growing nightlife culture and expanding corporate presence have contributed to increased demand and higher auction bids. Top Districts by Additional Revenue Malwa-Nimar belt maintains dominance The auction results highlight the continued dominance of the Malwa-Nimar region in excise revenue generation across Madhya Pradesh. Alongside Indore, districts like Dhar, Khargone, and Khandwa have made substantial contributions. In contrast, the state capital Bhopal, with 87 liquor shops, generated only ₹12.96 crore in additional revenue. High revenue, but rising challenges While Indore has become the most reliable revenue hub for the government, the steep auction bids bring their own challenges. Experts caution that contractors who acquire shops at such high prices face immense pressure to boost sales. This, in turn, increases the responsibility on authorities to control substance abuse, curb illegal liquor sales, and ensure responsible consumption.
