The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has caught Shankar Parmar, Assistant Commissioner of the CGST department in Ratlam, red-handed while accepting a bribe of ₹1.5 lakh. After this action on Tuesday, the accused was intensively interrogated for about 13 hours, following which the CBI team took him along on Wednesday morning. After this action, there was panic in the department, and silence prevailed in the office. According to information, the CBI Bhopal team had laid this trap based on a complaint by a businessman from Jawra. The complainant alleged that the Assistant Commissioner had been mentally harassing him for the past two months. Undue pressure was being created on him by pointing out deficiencies in the firm’s audit and documents, whereas the businessman claims that all his documents were correct as per the rules. Demand of ₹5 lakhs, trapped while taking ₹1.5 lakhs The Assistant Commissioner had demanded a bribe of ₹5 lakh in exchange for settling the matter. As per the deal, it was decided to pay the first installment of the bribe in Ratlam. On Tuesday evening, between 4 and 5 pm, when the complainant gave ₹1.5 lakh to furniture businessman Suresh Mansukhani as instructed by the Assistant Commissioner, the CBI raided near Anand Big Mall and caught them. Middleman also made accused In this corruption case, Ratlam-based furniture trader Suresh Mansukhani has also been made an accused. According to CBI, Mansukhani played the role of a middleman in the transaction of bribe money. He was present at the spot during the arrest, which clearly established his involvement. Departure after overnight interrogation After the arrest, the CBI team reached the CGST office located in Ratlam with the Assistant Commissioner. After interrogation that continued throughout the night, the team took him to Bhopal around 9 am on Wednesday morning. During this time, the complainant businessman was also part of the proceedings and later returned to Jaora. Investigation scope in other districts as well Dainik Bhaskar’s investigation has revealed that the businessman was being threatened for the past two months to be implicated in a false case of ‘digital fraud’. Distressed, the businessman had filed a complaint with CBI Bhopal on January 30. According to sources, besides Ratlam, there are reports of similar pressure being exerted on several traders in Jaora, Tal, and Alot as well. As the investigation progresses, there is a strong possibility of the complicity of some other officers and employees of the department coming to light. Following the arrest of the Assistant Commissioner, discussions about their suspension are intensifying, although the department has not yet officially confirmed this.
