I was sleeping in a separate room with my three daughters. My elder sister woke them up at night and took them with her. When I woke up in the morning, the gate was locked from the outside. Neither my sister nor the children were home. This is what Meena, the deceased’s younger sister, said. Savita, a resident of Kesli in Sagar, allegedly threw her four daughters into a well on Thursday and then died by suicide by hanging. She had given birth to her fourth daughter just five months ago. It is reported that her husband was angry about the birth of another daughter and had not even come to see her. After the deaths, the family has been unable to contact him because Savita had broken and thrown away her SIM card, and other relatives do not have his phone number. See three pictures Daughters’ bodies found in well 500 metres from home In Nanhi Devri Khamaria village under Kesli police station area of Sagar district, the bodies of Savita Bai (30), wife of Chandrabhan Lodhi, and her daughters Anshika (7), Raksha (5), Diksha (3), and Manisha (5 months) were found on Thursday. According to the family, when the woman and children were missing from home in the morning, a search began in the village and nearby fields. About 500 metres from the house, the body of the eldest daughter was seen in a 20-foot-deep well. Police were informed and locals pulled Anshika’s body out. Police then searched the well with divers, recovering the bodies of the three other daughters. The 5-month-old Manisha was tied in a sheet. Savita’s body was later found hanging from a tree about 100 metres from the well. ‘Locked me in room from outside’ Meena Lodhi, Savita’s younger sister, who had lived with her since childhood, said everyone slept after dinner on Wednesday night. At home were Savita, Meena and the four children, while the father-in-law had gone to a wedding. Meena said she was sleeping in a separate room with three girls, while Savita was in another room with the youngest daughter. Late at night, Savita woke the three girls and took them with her. Meena woke briefly but did not pay attention. In the morning, she found her room locked from the outside. Returned late at night and slept Father-in-law Gyani Singh Lodhi said the daughter-in-law threw the girls into the well and then hanged herself. He said he returned from a wedding around 3 AM and, being very tired, went straight to sleep. In the morning, his middle son’s daughter came home and noticed the children were missing. She also saw that the daughter-in-law’s sister was locked inside a room and opened the door. After this, the family started searching for Savita and the girls. About an hour later, the body of one girl was seen in a well. Soon after, the bodies of all four daughters were found in the well, while Savita’s body was discovered hanging from a tree. The family says they do not know why she took such a step. Son did not return home for 11 months Father Gyani Singh said his son Chandrabhan Singh Lodhi left home about 11 months ago, saying he was going for work. He now lives in Jabalpur and works on a bus, and used to talk on the phone occasionally. Even earlier, he often stayed away from home for months. Gyani Singh has three sons, all living in separate houses in the village. The family owns about 5.5 acres of land, around 1 acre of which is in Chandrabhan’s name. Tension over desire for a son Savita had four daughters, the youngest just five months old. Even after the birth, Chandrabhan did not return home and had not seen the child’s face, raising suspicion of tension between the couple over the desire for a son. Villagers are also saying the same quietly, though no one is speaking openly. Maternal home 5 km away Savita’s maternal home is in Paloh, about 5 km from her in-laws’ house. She was married to Chandrabhan about nine years ago. Since the marriage, her younger sister Meena has been living with her, where she studies and also helps with household chores.
