Madhya Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Jitu Patwari on Friday, questioned the state government’s declaration of “Farmers’ Welfare Year”, alleging that the agricultural system in the state is facing severe shortages and farmers are not receiving fair prices for their produce. Patwari made the remarks during a press conference at the State Congress Office, where he was accompanied by Congress leaders Mukesh Nayak, Abhay Dubey and Sukhdev Panse. “CM a wrestler, but defeated by officials’ moves” Taking a swipe at Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav, Patwari said the CM was known as a wrestler during his early days in Ujjain. He added sarcastically that while the CM may have been a wrestler, he now appears to be “defeated by the tactics of bureaucrats.” According to Patwari, whenever officials approach the Chief Minister with their strategies, he ends up accepting them without resistance. Patwari claimed such situations occur almost every month and urged the Chief Minister to maintain the dignity of his office. Wheat selling at ₹1,800 per quintal in CM’s district Patwari also accused the government of failing to deliver on its promises to farmers. He said the BJP had guaranteed procurement prices of: However, he alleged that in the Ujjain mandi, wheat is currently selling between ₹1,800 and ₹1,900 per quintal, even though it is the Chief Minister’s own region. Patwari said the Congress had also released a video highlighting the issue, claiming it shows the gap between government claims and the ground reality faced by farmers. “CM should present one-year report card” The Congress leader said the CM does not need to present a report of the past 20 years, but should at least provide a detailed account of the government’s performance over the past one year. “If the government is truly working for farmers’ welfare, it should make its one-year report public,” Patwari said. 60% posts vacant in Agriculture Department Patwari alleged that the agricultural system in Madhya Pradesh is suffering due to government neglect. According to official figures cited by him: He questioned how the government could claim to promote farmers’ welfare when such a large number of posts in agriculture-related departments remain unfilled. Patwari demanded that the government immediately fill the vacant positions and ensure farmers receive fair prices for their crops. Congress to launch public outreach against trade deal Patwari also announced that the Congress party will conduct a statewide public outreach campaign against a proposed trade deal. Under the initiative, the party will organise “Janmat Samvad” programmes in every district of Madhya Pradesh. Through these meetings, Congress leaders plan to inform people about the trade deal and explain how it could negatively impact farmers in the state. ‘The campaign will also aim to mobilise farmers and gather public opinion on the issue’, Patwari said.
