The controversy over the death of 35 people after consuming contaminated water in Indore’s Bhagirathpura has not yet settled when a similar scare has emerged in Gwalior. Five dead lizards have been found in a drinking water tank supplying water to around 1,300 flats built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY). Residents are angry and have accused the municipal corporation of negligence. They say the situation has arisen due to the lack of regular cleaning of the tank, posing a risk to human health. Most families living there do not have RO systems at home and drink water directly from the tank supply. The lizards were found in the water tank of Block E-52, Phase-1 of the PMAY flats in the Manpur area of Gwalior. Residents themselves removed the lizards from the tank, and a video of the incident has also surfaced. Since then, locals have stopped drinking water from the tank, and many have started ordering RO water. Officials ignore complaints Residents say they have been living in the flats for the past two years, but the municipal corporation has not carried out regular cleaning of the rooftop water tank. They allege that despite repeated complaints, the responsible officials have ignored the issue. Locals say they had recently met municipal corporation officials regarding the problem. The officials assured them that the issue would be resolved, but no concrete action has been taken so far. They questioned whether the authorities want to turn Gwalior into another Bhagirathpura of Indore. Poor Cleanliness and Security Residents have also alleged that both sanitation and security in the complex are poor. The contractor appointed for maintenance ignores complaints. Instead of the sanctioned five guards, only two are deployed, leading to frequent incidents of theft and other problems. Lizard Falling Unfortunate Municipal Commissioner Sangh Priya says that After the Indore incident, the corporation had cleaned the tanks and covered them, but the falling of the lizard is unfortunate. The contractor’s contract has expired, soon a permanent arrangement will be made after discussion with residents.
