protest-today-at-ujjain-collectorate:farmers-from-90-mp-villages-oppose-greenfield-road-project

Farmers from three districts will stage a major protest on Wednesday against the proposed two green field roads (Ujjain-Indore and Ujjain-Jaora) worth ₹7,000 Cr in Ujjain. Villagers from 90 affected villages will reach Ujjain Collectorate to seige it with 180 tractor-trolleys. Farmers are also bringing their rations and bedding and are preparing for an indefinite sit-in until their demands are met. This is the first time that farmers affected by both projects have come together. The farmers’ main protest is against the ‘Axis Control’ plan, under which the road will be built 15-20 feet above the ground, and villages will not get connectivity to it. Farmers argue, why should they give land for a road on which they cannot drive their vehicles? According to farmer leader Rajesh Solanki, they have two main demands: first, the green field road should be built on the ground like a normal highway, and second, compensation should be determined at market value. 56 villages in Ujjain, 20 in Indore, and 13 in Ratlam are directly affected by this project. Two-point demands Farmers are preparing for a decisive battle, angered by assurances received for about a year and a half. Their clear demand is that instead of building the highway as an ‘access control’ (a bridge-like elevated road), it should be built at ground level so that local villagers can benefit from its access. Additionally, compensation for the land being acquired should be given at the current market rate. Due to the lack of a clear response from the administration, farmers have now planned to stay in the Collectorate premises with their rations and water.
