In the widely reported case of 30 children dying after consuming toxic cough syrup in Chhindwara, the Madhya Pradesh High Court has rejected the bail pleas of the main accused, Dr Praveen Soni, along with three other accused. Following the court’s decision, all four will remain in jail. Court calls deaths extremely serious During Tuesday’s hearing, the High Court described the deaths of the children as extremely serious and refused to grant bail. In its order, the court observed that the accused doctor failed to follow government guidelines and allegedly administered a banned fixed-dose combination medicine to children under four years of age. The court noted that this violation led to the deaths of the children. Senior medical advice ignored The hearing also revealed that Dr Praveen Soni allegedly ignored the advice of a senior doctor from Nagpur and continued prescribing the cough syrup, which later proved fatal. The Chhindwara police arrested Dr Soni on 5 October 2025 and produced him before a lower court, which remanded him to judicial custody. Subsequently, a bail application was filed in the High Court, which has now been dismissed. Background of the case The case relates to the death of 30 children in Chhindwara district after they were allegedly given a toxic cough syrup. The incident sparked widespread concern over medical negligence and the use of prohibited medicines for young children. With the High Court rejecting the bail pleas, the accused will continue to remain in custody as the trial proceeds.
