A man was tied up and assaulted by an angry crowd at Gwalior Railway Station after he was allegedly caught trying to steal a woman passenger’s gold earring. A video of the incident has since gone viral on social media, with several users describing the assault as “Taliban-style punishment.” Police, however, said the man was apprehended by passengers while allegedly attempting to snatch the woman’s gold earring. Passengers allegedly caught accused red-handed According to police, the incident took place around 2 pm on June 28. The accused was allegedly caught red-handed while trying to snatch a gold earring from a woman passenger. Enraged passengers immediately overpowered him. Crowd tied him up and assaulted him Eyewitnesses said three to four men tied the accused’s hands and beat him with kicks and punches on the railway platform. The viral video also appears to show the man tied to a water tank while being assaulted by members of the crowd. Police say accused has previous theft cases According to the Railway Protection Force (RPF), the accused had been living at the railway station with his wife and their eight-month-old child, allegedly posing as a beggar while carrying out thefts. RPF officials said he is a resident of Vidisha district and has previously been arrested in several theft cases. Claim of throwing infant not officially confirmed Eyewitnesses alleged that while trying to escape from the crowd, the accused threw his eight-month-old child onto the platform. The claim has not been officially confirmed by the police. RPF rescues accused, hands him over to GRP After receiving information about the incident, RPF personnel reached the spot, rescued the accused from the mob, and took him into custody. He was later handed over to the Government Railway Police (GRP) for legal action. RPF Sub-Inspector Ravindra Rajawat said the accused had been caught by passengers while allegedly attempting to steal the woman’s gold earring. He added that the man had a history of theft-related offences and that the GRP is investigating the case further.
