Australian opening batsman Usman Khawaja has announced his retirement from international cricket. The 39-year-old Khawaja stated that the final Test of the Ashes series, which will be played at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG), will be his last international match. Khawaja has so far scored 6206 runs in 87 Test matches, including 16 centuries. At the press conference, Khawaja, present with his wife Rachel, children, and family, said that he had been contemplating this decision for a long time. He said, ‘Coming into this series, I had a feeling that this might be my last series. After a long conversation with my wife, I felt that now is the right time. I am happy that I am able to retire on my own terms, at a ground like the SCG.’ On retirement, the Aussie opener told the reporters, “I’m here to announce today that I will be retiring from all international cricket after the SCG Test match. God, through cricket, has given me far more than I could have imagined. He’s given me memories I’ll carry forever, friendship that goes well beyond the game, and lessons that shaped me, who I am, off the field.” Khawaja mentioned that the team’s head coach, Andrew McDonald, wanted him to continue playing. There was even a discussion about the 2027 India tour, but he decided to stick to his decision. Being dropped became a turning point Khawaja admitted that the start of the Ashes was not easy for him. Not getting a place in the starting XI in the Adelaide Test was a big sign for him. He said, “When I wasn’t picked in Adelaide, I understood that it was time to move on.”
However, after Steve Smith fell ill, he got an opportunity and played innings of 82 and 40 runs. Hurt by being called ‘selfish’ Khawaja clarified that he was not trying to force his way into the team. He had told the coach that if the team wanted him to, he could retire immediately. He said that he was upset by people calling him selfish, whereas the team management itself wanted to see him play further. Usman Khawaja to continue to play domestic cricket and BBL Even after retiring from international cricket, Khawaja will not be completely away from cricket. He will continue to play the Big Bash League for Brisbane Heat and is expected to remain available for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield. Cricket Australia’s reaction Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg said, “Usman has made a huge contribution to Australian cricket both through his outstanding achievements as one of our most stylish and resilient batters since his Test debut 15 years ago, and off-field, particularly through the Usman Khawaja Foundation.” “On behalf of Australian cricket, I would like to thank and congratulate Usman for all he has achieved.” Khawaja’s foundation helps youths from refugee, immigrant, Indigenous, and poor socioeconomic backgrounds through introductory cricket programs and educational support.
