Former Australian cricketer Damien Martyn has been admitted to hospital due to meningitis (inflammation of the brain membrane) and has been placed in an induced coma. He is undergoing treatment at a hospital in Brisbane, where his condition remains serious. His health suddenly deteriorated on Boxing Day, after which he was immediately admitted to a hospital in Queensland. Gilchrist told the media, “He is getting the best of treatment, and (Martyn’s partner) Amanda and his family know that a lot of people are sending their prayers and best wishes.” Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg said the board and the wider cricket community were thinking of Martyn and his family during the difficult period. He said, “I’m saddened to hear of Damien’s illness. Additionally, he has also played in four T20 International matches. In his career, Martyn scored 4406 runs in Test cricket, while 5346 runs are registered in his name in ODIs. His highest Test score of 165 came against New Zealand in 2005, and he finished his career with 13 Test hundreds. Even after retiring from international cricket in 2006, he remained associated with cricket. Martyn was also part of the 1999 and 2003 World Cup-winning Australian teams.
