Political tension rises over central government’s plan to replace MGNREGA with the Developed India-Employment and Livelihood Guarantee Mission (Rural) Act, 2025. In Bhopal on Tuesday, Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan criticised the Punjab government and opposition parties at a press conference. He said MGNREGA started about 20 years ago, and earlier schemes kept changing in form and purpose. On Home Minister Amit Shah praising the Chief Minister in Gwalior, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said Dr. Mohan Yadav is working even faster and with more energy. He added that Madhya Pradesh is developing quickly and extended his best wishes to the Chief Minister. NREGA gradually became synonymous with corruption Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that MNREGA had gradually become synonymous with corruption. Work was being done by machines instead of laborers, and despite huge sums of money being spent, planned development of villages could not be achieved. He informed that intensive discussions on this subject had been going on for the past one year, after which, keeping in mind the goal of developed India, the ‘Jai Ram Ji Yojana’ has been introduced. He said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s dream is of a developed India as well as developed villages. Under this very thought, now the Gram Panchayat itself will prepare the development plan for villages, so that schemes can be implemented effectively on the ground. Sharp attack on opposition and Punjab government The Union Minister also targeted the opposition’s behavior in Parliament. He said that the opposition created a ruckus in Parliament, but he firmly put forward his point. Regarding the calling of a one-day assembly session in Punjab against the law passed by Parliament, he said that it is against the constitution and the parliamentary system. Shivraj Singh Chouhan alleged that the Punjab government and its allies are doing politics of blind opposition, while the Punjab government itself faces several cases of corruption. On Amit Shah’s praise, he said – Mohan Yadav is working at a fast pace When asked about Home Minister Amit Shah praising the Chief Minister in Gwalior, Shivraj Singh Chouhan said that Dr. Mohan Yadav is working with even more energy and at a faster pace than him. He said that Madhya Pradesh is developing rapidly and for this, his best wishes are with the Chief Minister. Comment on Rahul Gandhi Shivraj Singh Chauhan reacted sharply to Rahul Gandhi’s question regarding the minister not having information about the scheme. He said that Rahul Gandhi “lives in a fantasy world” and is disconnected from the reality of the country. He said that it is not possible for any scheme to be implemented without the process of the Cabinet and Council of Ministers. Reaction to Mamata Banerjee’s Temple Announcement On West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s announcement to build a Mahakal temple in North Bengal, Shivraj Singh Chauhan said that they only remember temples during election time. He said that temples and religious activities are a matter of faith, but when religious institutions are attacked, these very people remain silent. Shivraj Singh Chauhan quipped, “As soon as elections come, they apply ‘tripund’ (a religious mark), and start reciting Hanuman Chalisa and Durga Saptashati.” Bill/Resolution in Punjab Assembly Shivraj said that the Punjab government has called a special assembly session on December 30, in which a resolution/proposal will be brought against the VB-G RAM G law. This resolution will attempt to pass, stating that this new law of the central government is a threat to rural livelihoods. State Rural Development Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond has said that the new law will have a severe impact on rural laborers, the poor, and Scheduled Caste communities, and it is being called a “black law” in Punjab. Union Rural Development Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has repeatedly supported this new law in Parliament and the press. He says that it is an advanced form of MGNREGA, in which the guarantee of employment has been increased from 100 to 125 days and gram panchayats have been given more authority over schemes. Shivraj Singh Chouhan has also been attacking opponents, saying that their allegations are inspired by a “political” direction, while the new law will strengthen rural development.
