A serious case of alleged extortion has surfaced at Chhatarpur District Jail. A video has gone viral showing claims that prisoners are being charged extra for goods and services inside the jail. Officials have started investigating the matter, and senior police officers visited the jail to inspect the situation. Viral video raises allegations The video claims that a female jail guard charges prisoners above fixed rates for delivering items. Pushpa Ahirwar, reportedly sitting in the jail canteen, is said to act as an agent for the jailer. The video allegedly records discussions about how much money is charged for sending different items inside the jail. However, upon receiving the information, DIG Jail Akhilesh Tomar visited Chhatarpur District Jail late in the evening to inspect the matter. An investigation is underway. High rates for everyday items According to the information, newly arrived prisoners are charged Rs 5,000 for avoiding duties like sweeping or cleaning toilets. A bundle of gutkha or bidi is reportedly sold for Rs 250. Canteen items are allegedly sold at 50% above the MRP. It is also claimed that influential people or government employees may be extorted between Rs 10,000 and Rs 50,000. Prisoners who refuse to pay are said to be beaten. Guard allegedly protected Pushpa Ahirwar has been posted as a jail guard since 2014-15. She reportedly manages the canteen after Jailer Dilip Singh Jatav’s arrival.
