The case of Dr. Rashmi Verma, Assistant Professor in the Department of Trauma and Emergency Medicine at AIIMS Bhopal, has gone beyond a medical emergency, raising serious questions about administrative pressure, work culture, and internal departmental conflicts at the institute. Dr. Rashmi allegedly attempted suicide by injecting herself with a poisonous substance at her residence after duty and has since been on ventilator support at AIIMS Bhopal. Notice of ‘Serious misconduct’ Replied—Notice shattered morale In her written response, Dr. Rashmi stated that a notice with such language was painful, insulting, and mentally unsettling. She clarified that she never intentionally violated rules and went into deep stress after receiving the notice. Clarification given on academic leave Dr. Rashmi clarified that she had taken academic leave for a conference from September 25 to 27, 2025, and informed the faculty group on August 25 as per departmental instructions. She stated that the HOD had seen the message and attached screenshots of the faculty group as proof. Restriction on meeting HOD without appointment Meanwhile, the department issued another notice stating that, except for Dr. Bhupeshwari Patel and Dr. Babulal, all faculty members must now take prior appointments to meet HOD Dr. Mohammad Yunus. Appointments are to be scheduled through DEO Nitesh Kumar Pandey, with a mobile number and email ID provided in the notice. Strategy to improve system or increase pressure? After this order, discussions have intensified in the department. Some faculty members are calling it an improvement in working methods, while many consider it an unnecessary control and a step to increase mental pressure. The question arises: when direct communication was possible before, why such strictness now? Dr. Rashmi on ventilator, condition critical Dr. Rashmi Verma’s condition remains critical. She was admitted to AIIMS after attempting suicide on Wednesday. Her condition improved slightly on Saturday morning, but in the evening, she had to be put back on ventilator support. Crucial 72 hours According to the treating doctors, Saturday evening’s MRI report is disappointing. In such cases, the situation becomes clear after 72 hours. Another MRI will be conducted on Sunday at 12 PM, after which the situation will become clearer. Dr. Rashmi’s husband, Dr. Manmohan Shakya, said, On Thursday, she returned home normally from duty. The atmosphere at home was normal, but after some time, she was found unconscious. She was brought to AIIMS in a serious condition around 10:30 PM. Police took statements from family members Awadhpuri police station has recorded statements from the husband and other family members. According to the police, family members say that Dr. Rashmi was not under any apparent stress. The reason why she took this step is not clear at present.
