MP govt plans salary hike for MLAs:Legislators to receive ₹1.7 lakh, ministers’ pay to rise by 30%, Bill to be tabled in assembly

Madhya Pradesh is set to increase salaries and allowances for its legislators. MLAs are likely to get a Rs 60,000 raise, taking their total monthly pay to Rs 1.7 lakh. Former MLAs’ pensions are proposed to be raised to Rs 58,000. The salaries of the Chief Minister, ministers, state ministers, Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Assembly, and Leader of Opposition are also expected to increase by 18–30 per cent. The Parliamentary Affairs Department prepared the proposal on Thursday and is sending it to the Chief Minister for theoretical approval. The government aims to table the related bill during the winter session of the Assembly starting 1 December. This will mark the first increase in nine years for MPs and ministers in Madhya Pradesh. Read the report… Assembly speaker announced the proposal Earlier this year, during the budget session, Leader of Opposition Umang Singhar and other MLAs demanded a salary hike. The Assembly Speaker, Narendra Singh Tomar, then stated that if the government forms a committee to consider the pay revision, the Assembly could submit its recommendations. Chief Minister Mohan Yadav approved the move, and on 27 October, a three-member committee was formed, including Deputy CM Jagdish Devda, BJP MLA Ajay Vishnoi, and MLA Sachin Yadav from Kasrawad, Khargone. Committee submits recommendations After two rounds of discussion, the committee submitted proposals for raising salaries, allowances, and pensions to the state government. Initially, the focus was on pensions for former MLAs, but the government also asked for proposals on increasing pay for the CM, ministers, Speaker, Deputy Speaker, and Leader of Opposition. MLAs’ Pay to Increase by 54% Official sources indicate that MLAs may receive a ₹60,000 hike, a 54% increase over the current ₹1.1 lakh (₹30,000 basic + ₹80,000 allowances). This will take total monthly pay to ₹1.7 lakh. The last salary revision was in 2016. Comparative salaries Former MLAs’ pensions could rise 66% Currently, former MLAs receive a pension of ₹20,000 plus ₹15,000 for medical aid, totaling ₹35,000. The proposal suggests a ₹23,000 increase, bringing the total to ₹58,000 per month. Assembly Speaker and Deputy Speaker Leader of Opposition Currently receiving ₹1.7 lakh, the Leader of Opposition is proposed to get a 29% hike, raising the total to ₹2.2 lakh per month. Chief Minister and Ministers Other considerations The committee also discussed providing insurance coverage up to ₹10 lakh for MLAs and covering medical expenses for family members. No final decision was made, as most costs are already borne by the state government.
